New Sunscreen Filter, Same Golden Rule

The FDA has approved bemotrizinol, the first new sunscreen filter in the U.S. in more than 25 years. It's stable, gentle, and exciting news. But as we discussed on this week's episode of Facially Conscious, a new filter doesn't change the most important rule: the sunscreen that protects you is the one you'll actually wear every day.

On the episode, Dr. Vicki Rapaport reminded us that zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are already excellent sunscreen filters. That's why both sunscreens in Trina Renea Skincare are mineral. I chose the Natural Physical SPF 50 Primer for faces because its sheer, soft-focus tint lets your sunscreen double as your makeup base. And Clear Choice SPF 45 — formerly Sun Smoothie — is the zinc oxide sunscreen I reach for on the neck, chest, and hands, where makeup never goes.

Not sure where to start? Take my product quiz. And for your lips, Dr. Vicki's tip is an SPF lip balm applied just past the edge of your lips — for that and all my favorites, go to my little black book on ShopMy, linked at the bottom of this blog.
